8 Bruneian Students to Compete In Indonesia Quran Contest

Eight students from Tahfiz AlQuran Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah Institute (ITQSHHB) were given their plane tickets to Jakarta yesterday, after being selected to compete in the Annual Prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz Competition on the Memorization of the Holy Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet for Southeast Asian countries which begins today.

Ahlul Bayt News Agency ; Two students will compete in each of the four categories of the competition, namely the memorization of 30 juzuk (chapter), 20 juzuk, 15 juzuk and 10 juzuk categories.

This is the third time that Brunei will be sending representatives to the competition.

In 2008 and 2009, Md Hasim Hj Abdullah and Md Huzailan Hj Kassim secured the second spot in the 20juzuk category respectively.

Hirmani Hj Salehuddin, who will be accompanying the students to Jakarta, said that they hoped to achieve this and better this year.

He said that the students selected to go were qualified and capable to compete in the event.

"Their preparation is through the school curriculum, but there are also two trainers who will be joining us in Jakarta," Hirmani added.

Ustaz Hj Muhammad Termizi Hj Mahmood, who was the escort officer last year, said the competition was the most prestigious in the region, with prize money of around US$10,000.

Whilst the competition is for Southeast Asian countries, other countries from central Asia have also been invited to participate, including Pakistan.

The competition will last two days, and the awards ceremony will be held on the third day.

The competition is organized by the Religious Attaché of Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Indonesia, in cooperation with Ministry of Islamic Affairs in Indonesia.

The participants are expected to leave for Jakarta today, and will be greeted by staff from the Saudi Arabian embassy in Indonesia.

Present at the presentation ceremony yesterday was Head of the Syiar Division at the Ministry of Religious Affairs Hj Mohamad Garing, who presented the participants with their plane tickets.
