Ahlul Bayt News Agency - ABNA - A translation of the holy Quran into Wolof language was unveiled by World Association of Dissemination of Islam (AMAI) in a ceremony inTouba city, Senegal.
Written in Arabic script, the rendering is considered to be the first translation of the entire Quran into Wolof.
Previously, in 1981, the Islamic Institute in Dakar had published translations of Surahs Fatiha and Baqara into Wolof in Moroccan script along with Arabic text of the Surahs. The 50-page book was entitled “translation of meanings of the holy Quran into Wolof”. It was a word-for-word translation without any explanation and had no reference to authors or translators whose works had been used for the translation.
Wolof is one of languages spoken in Senegal, Niger, Congo, and grouped with languages of North Atlantic. It is the second language of Senegal people and a commercial language of their neighbors. 20 percent of the people of the region speak languages other than Wolof.
