Al-Azhar Condemns Quran Burning in US

Egyptian Al-Azhar Religious Institute issued a statement condemning the act of a group of Americans who tore and burned the Holy Quran pages on September 11 anniversary and called it a despicable and stupid act.

According to Egyptian daily Alyaum-Assabi, Ahmed Tayeb said that the spiteful group of religious fanatics insisted on insulting Islam and desecrating the Quran.

He stressed that burning the Holy Quran does no harm to Divine words, adding ,”This tiny group do not represent western nations because a huge number of intellectuals from these countries have condemned such stupid behavior”.

Muslims treat all divine religions with respect and seek to expand ties and relations with different nations beyond the existing racial and religious differences. However, the Muslim world does not tolerate desecration of Islamic sanctities, he said.

While Terry Jones, the extremist American pastor, gave up his decision to burn the Quran on September 11 attack anniversary, some Christian fanatics gathered before the White House and burned pages of the Holy Book.

Two pastors also burned Quran copies in front of a small group of people in the city of Springfield, Tennessee, on Saturday.
