Ahlul Bayt News Agency, Idd el-Fitr will be marked on Friday, the director of Sharia at the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, Sheikh Hussien Rajab Kakooza, announced last night.
Sheikh Kakooza said the moon had not been sighted in Uganda and in the Middle East and therefore Muslims should fast today. on Thursday will also mark the 30th day of fasting. According to the Islamic Calendar, Muslims can fast for 29 or 30 days.
Like fasting, Idd el-Fitr is celebrated after sighting the new crescent moon. This day is different from Idd-al-Adhuh, which was celebrated by slaughtering of animals. The dates for celebrating Idd el-Fitr vary since the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle. It can therefore fall in August, September or October.
At Gadaffi National Mosque the Mufti, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje, will preside over prayers, while his rival, Sheikh Zubair Kayongo, will lead prayers at Noor Mosque in Bombo, Luweero District.
Hajj Nsereko Mutumba, the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council spokesperson, yesterday said the prayers would begin at 9am. In his Idd message, Sheikh Mubajje advised Muslims to be tolerant as the country moves into the election period.
