The prime minister said everyone in the country should realise that sensitive content on websites could touch on the sensitivities of those affected.
“They should understand that websites do not give us total freedom to do anything, including insulting religions and individuals.
“We must use the alternative media responsibly,” he told reporters when asked to comment on the inclination of irresponsible people to publish seditious statements and those insulting religion on their websites or social websites such as Facebook.
The prime minister said everyone should respect the country’s laws and should not make statements which could hurt others, especially pertaining to religion.
He said the people of various races and religions in the country should realise that Malaysia had laws which protected the sanctity of Islam.
Earlier, Najib distributed “duit raya” (Aidilfitri cash donations) and tithes to more than 4,000 poor people and single mothers, among them non-Malays, in his Pekan parliamentary constituency.
Also present was his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.
Speaking to reporters, Najib said he hoped that private firms and government-linked companies would also play an important role in helping the poor.
