Ahlul Bayt News Agency – ABNA -The Yolo County Muslim community invites county residents to fast for a day and join to break the fast on Wednesday, Sept. 1, at the Davis Veteran's Memorial Center, 203 E. 14th St.

Admission is free and people of all faiths are invited.

"It feels so good and joyous to break the fast with our great Davis community," states Muslim community leader Hamza El-Nakhal of Davis. "The sun sets at 7:38 p.m. on that day. Social time starts at 7 p.m.

"As you may know that the month of Ramadan started on Wednesday, Aug. 11, and the last day is projected to be on Thursday, Sept. 9, based on the new moon sighting," El-Nakhal stated.

The event will offer opportunities for people of all faith to experience the Muslim month of fasting.

Ramadan is the ninth month on Islamic lunar calendar. During that time, Muslims abstain from food, drink and other sensual pleasures from break of dawn to sunset.

They end their fast with a meal after sunset prayers. The fast is performed to learn discipline, self-restraint and generosity, while obeying God's commandments. Fasting (along with declaration of faith, daily prayers, charity, and pilgrimage to Mecca) is one of the five pillars of Islam.

The end of Ramadan is marked by communal prayers called EID AL-FITR, or feast of completing the fast. For people of other faiths to join the Iftar, fasting is not mandatory, especially for those with health concern.

The month of Ramadan is for reflection and self improvements. In honor of this goal, Shiekh Alaa El-Bakry, the guest speaker, El-Nakhal reported. He will make a presentation on "The Rights of Neighbors."
