Holy month of Ramzan begins Thursday across India

Fasting month of Ramzan will begin from Thursday, August 12, across India following sighting of new moon here Wednesday evening.

Ahlul Bayt News Agency (ABNA.ir), “The new moon of Ramzan was sighted on Wednesday evening. Hence, Ramzan fasting will start from Thursday,” Maulana Mufti Mukarram, the Shahi Imam of Fatehpuri mosque told after a meeting of the Royat Hilal Committee.

The meeting was chaired by Mufti Mukkaram and attended by ulemas and scholars.

Meanwhile, the first day of fasting was observed today in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Indonesia, the largest Muslim nation, and in Persian Gulf states of Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar.

Muslims also began observing Ramadan in Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, Palestine, Malaysia and Singapore.

Muslims fast throughout the holy month which culminates in Eid celebrations. Devouts will exercise self-restraint and sanctity, two core aspects of the Ramzan, through fasting.

Ramzan, the ninth month of Islamic Lunar calendar, begins after the month of Shaban, after the new moon has been sighted. Ramzan is the month in which the Quran was revealed.
