A lot of people are up in arms over plans to build a “mosque” (actually, an Islamic community center) near Ground Zero in New York City. Presumably, they oppose it because the 9/11 attackers were Muslims. (So New York Muslims must share guilt for the attack?)
If the attackers had been Christian extremists, would the complainers oppose building a church at the spot where the proposed Islamic center will be? What do you think?
Blaming Islam for the actions of a group of crazed Muslims would be as absurd as blaming Christianity for the terrorist actions of a few Christian wingnuts. For example, because of Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh, complainers could say: “Billy Graham, stay out of Oklahoma City! That’s where Christian terrorists blew up the federal building, which makes you partly responsible.”
