Make sure halal food is ‘on the menu’, Muslims told

MUSLIMS were urged to be careful and mindful when choosing food to ensure that they were halal and healthy, for halal food would bring blessings while non-halal ones would prevent a person from doing good and forget the Hereafter.

MUSLIMS were urged to be careful and mindful when choosing food to ensure that they were halal and healthy, for halal food would bring blessings while non-halal ones would prevent a person from doing good and forget the Hereafter.

The sermon, read by Imams yesterday, highlighted the fact that in Islam the matter of food was taken seriously because it is an important basis for the spiritual and physical formation of human beings.

The sermon added: “Eating halal food will also give rise to feelings of gratitude and obedience to Allah (SWT), soften one’s heart and bring about feelings of gratitude for the Almighty. This will ensure that your good deeds are noted and your prayers will be answered,” it said.

In light of this we should be careful when choosing food and to ensure that they were halal, the sermon added.

Processed food is readily available, produced in the country and overseas, so it should be checked carefully before purchasing.

“We are grateful to Allah, as our country, through the relevant government agencies, has made the initiative to ensure that the food products sold to the Muslims are halal and healthy, monitor the entry of poultry and meat supplies from abroad and mark places that are not suitable for Muslims to eat at,” said the sermon.

However, the sermon pointed out, there were still Muslims in the country who smuggled in meat and poultry and freely eat at restaurants which were marked as being not appropriate for Muslims.

The sermon also reminded Muslims not only to make sure the food was halal, but also purchased with legally-earned money and not through stealing, deceit, gambling and corruption.
