The Indonesian National Police said Saturday that at least 184 people were killed in homecoming traffic rush in the six days prior to the Islamic festivity of Eid-ul-fitr.
According to the Jakartapost.com, the National Police spokesman, Major General Nanan Soekarna told a press conference here that at least 466 traffic accidents occurred in less than a week before the holiday.
Nanan said that the police were doing their best to help reduce traffic accidents during the rush, and advised homebound travelers to take more care on their journey home.
Last year, 360 people were killed in traffic accidents in the three days following the Eid-ul-fitr.
The Eid-ul-fitr, meaning "back to purity", is the end of 30 day-fasting month in Islam religion. For many Indonesians, Eid-ul-fitralso means back to their origin to celebrate the occasion with relatives.
