Hashemi Rafsanjani pointed to the history of Iran-China cooperation since the Islamic Revolution, saying “(We) have always believed that China is one of our best partners.”
Good political relationships form the cornerstone for economic cooperation between the two countries, he said, adding Beijing and Tehran should develop cooperation at international level to strengthen their political ties.
Referring to Chinese partnership in Iran’s nuclear projects in past years, he said Iran started its nuclear projects with the help of China, although Chinese withdrew from projects later.
However, the Chinese’ good start made Iranians determined to continue the project, he added.
He also thanked China for its cooperation in Tehran’s metro project, saying the two countries should cooperate to accelerate metro in Mashhad that is already under construction.
Elsewhere in his talks, Rafsanjani said, “Certainly the way you (the China government) look at the Chinese Muslims will influence the country’s interaction and relations with 60 Islamic nations whose population is more than China.”
Xiaoyan, for his part, said that the Muslims are the minority groups that are respected in China and the Beijing government knows the important role the Muslims play in the country’s economy and its relationship with the Islamic nations.
He also briefed Rafsanjani on the latest developments in economic and trade ties between the two countries.
China is ready to expand ties with Iran in all areas especially in oil, gas, and transportation projects, the diplomat explained.
The Chinese ambassador also invited Rafsanjani to visit China. The Expediency Council chief said he would travel to China at an appropriate time in the future.
