President Jacob Zuma congratulated on Friday Muslim community over holy month of Ramadan, Pretoria news said.

Ramadan, the holiest period for the Islamic faith, is the ninth month according to Muslim calendar, during which Muslims will fast.

"This period of fasting is regarded as a time of deep introspection, a strengthening of the bonds of the family and community," the presidency was quoted as saying in a statement.

Zuma said in the statement that African nation was indeed privileged to have within it the poor, the hungry and the homeless in a time of economic difficulty.

"This is a lesson and an example for South Africans for all faiths," the statement was quoted as saying.
