Thai police offer reward for mosque attack leads

hai police Thursday announced a $8500 reward for leads on a bloody mosque attack in the troubled south which killed 11 people earlier this month.

The attack in Narathiwat province, which wounded another 12 people as they attended evening prayers, was one of the most violent for months in the troubled south, where 3,700 have died in a five-year insurgency.

The police - under pressure from local Muslims to find the perpetrators - have so far made little progress in their investigation.

"Whoever gives information to the police that leads to the arrest of those who shot people at the mosque will get 200,000 baht," said Major General Dejnarong Suthicharnbancha, deputy regional police commander.

He told that he could guarantee full protection for informants, whose identities would not be released.

An unknown number of masked and armed gunmen attacked the mosque in the Cho-Ai-Rong district of Narathiwat late on June 8. The government has blamed militants but villagers alleged Thai security forces were to blame.

Violence has spiked in recent weeks in the south, targeting security forces and civilians, from teachers and monks to rubber tappers.

The southern region was an autonomous Malay Muslim sultanate until Thailand annexed it in 1902, provoking decades of tension.
