He argues that a sect which merely makes up less than 10% of the Muslim population has no right to impose its own beliefs on a 90% majority.
Speaking to a delegation from Iran’s foreign ministry in the holy city of Qom, he added, “We should not just watch how wahabis maltreat hajj performers and visitors to the holy land.
We need to constantly highlight the fact that the holy sites in Saudi Arabia belong to the Muslim world not to a specific sect.”
Wahabi ideology is an extreme version of Islam which is mainly practiced in Saudi Arabia.
Last year Ayatollah Makarem threatened to boycott minor hajj if Saudi hajj authorities do not take measures to stop mistreatment of Shia pilgrims.
