AhlulBayt News Agency: An Iranian cleric described the religious ritual of Itikaf (religious retreat) as a path for personal development and building a society based on the teaching of the Quran.
Hojat-ol-Islam Majid Hosseinpour said Itikaf is an act of worship aimed at Tahzeeb Nafs (purification of the soul), drawing closer to God, enhancing one’s spiritual capacity, and personal development.
He said this act of worship is rooted in religious culture and the Sunnah (tradition) of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
He considered one of the significant benefits of Itikaf to be the protection of society against cultural threats and said it creates an environment for focusing on God, which in turn safeguards people against sin.
“Today, our society needs to deepen spirituality and strengthen religious protection to address many social problems and challenges.”
He went on to say that Itikaf is a valuable opportunity for deeper understanding and reflection on the Quran, stating that the presence of Quran reciters and memorizers in Itikaf rituals is highly significant.
“We should strive to utilize this capacity to promote the Quranic culture and create an environment that encourages adolescents and young people to embrace religious teachings,” he stressed.
Itikaf is a tradition of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his family, and is regarded as a highly rewarding act of worship in Islam.
It is a spiritual practice in Islam that involves staying in a mosque for a certain number of days, fasting, and praying to God.
It is usually performed on the 13th, 14th, and 15th of Rajab, the seventh month of the Islamic calendar, which fall on January 14, 15, and 16 this year.
