AhlulBayt News Agency: The Kent Police Department is requesting help from the public to identify a suspect captured on surveillance footage vandalizing a local mosque by throwing rocks and breaking its windows early Saturday morning.
According to the Islamic Center of Federal Way (ICFW), the incident occurred around 12:15 a.m. Surveillance video shows a pickup truck driving onto the mosque's premises. A man exits the vehicle, throws at least two rocks at the building, breaking its windows, and then quickly drives away, Fox 13 reported on Saturday.
ICFW President Atif Nazir commented on the incident, stating, "The window can be replaced, but this should never have happened in the first place."
Kent City Council President Satwinder Kaur also addressed the incident, emphasizing that such actions are unacceptable. "This type of behavior won’t be tolerated. Any type of hate crime, any type of crime against our religious institutions, it’s just not acceptable," she said.
Kaur mentioned ongoing collaboration with the Kent Police Department and the mosque leadership to ensure the perpetrator is held accountable.
While the incident has not yet been officially classified as a hate crime, authorities are actively investigating.
This is not the first time the Islamic Center of Federal Way has been targeted. Last summer, the mosque was burglarized, and approximately $300 in charitable donations were stolen.
Nazir noted that additional security measures, including surveillance cameras, have been implemented to enhance safety. "We just want everyone to feel safe. This is a place of worship," he added.
Authorities urge anyone with information about the vandalism to contact the Kent Police Department at 253-852-2121.
