AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): A senior Iraqi cleric dismissed the idea of dissolution of the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), stressing that the PMU is an integral part of the country’s governing system.
Ayatollah Sheikh Hassan al-Jawahiri, a scholar at Najaf Islamic Seminary, said any attempt at dissolving the PMU would guarantee the return of terrorist group.
He noted that the PMU, also known as Hashd al-Shaabi, is an official and legal organization that operates under the command of the Iraqi armed forces.
It is an important organization for guaranteeing security, preventing foreign interference in Iraq’s internal affairs, and thwarting foreign plots, he stated.
The cleric underlined the need for the PMU to remain as part of Iraq’s defense apparatus, adding that supporting it is necessary for ensuring security and stability in the country.
Ayatollah al-Jawahiri also noted that demands for the PMU to be dissolved come from international institutions that see it as an obstacle to their domination of the country’s assets and that is why they want it to be eliminated.
The PMU is a government-sponsored umbrella organization composed of around 40 factions of volunteer counter-terrorism forces, including Shia Muslim groups like Asa’ib, besides Sunni Muslims, Christians and Kurds.
