AhlulBayt News Agency: The spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in the Gaza Strip, Adnan Abu Hasna, said that the decision to suspend the receipt of aid trucks from the Kerem Abu Salem commercial crossing came due to “the dangerousness of the situation” and the lack of protection for the aid trucks as they are completely stolen, which makes all the efforts futile.”
Abu Hasna explained in media statements that UNRWA did not stop all its services, but rather “temporarily stopped” the receipt of food aid trucks, noting that health services are still ongoing, “but the continuation of the current situation could lead to the complete collapse of the humanitarian system in Gaza within a few days.”
The UNRWA spokesman stressed that what is happening in the Gaza Strip regarding the entry of aid is “absolutely unacceptable” and that “it cannot continue,” referring to the strenuous efforts made by United Nations organizations to bring in trucks.
Abu Hasna pointed out that the Israeli occupation authorities have the full ability to protect the convoys, explaining that the areas where the thefts occur are very close to the Kerem Abu Salem crossing and under Israeli security control.
He described the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip as extremely dangerous, as famine has already spread in the northern and southern areas of the Strip.
Earlier on Sunday, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini suspended the delivery of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip through the Israeli-held Kerem Abu Salem crossing due to insecurity.
“We are pausing the delivery of aid through Kerem Shalom, the main crossing point for humanitarian aid into Gaza. The road out of this crossing has not been safe for months,” Lazzarini said in a statement.
