Resurgence of terror groups in Syria in response to Israel’s failures in Gaza, Lebanon: Iraqi MP

A senior Iraqi legislator says the recent surge in terrorist activities in Syria is in response to Israel’s setbacks in Gaza and Lebanon, and its inability to drive a wedge between the resistance in the Palestinian territory and its supporting forces on other fronts.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): A senior Iraqi legislator says the recent surge in terrorist activities in Syria is in response to Israel’s setbacks in Gaza and Lebanon, and its inability to drive a wedge between the resistance in the Palestinian territory and its supporting forces on other fronts.

"The failure of the Zionist entity in Lebanon and Gaza, and its inability to shatter the unity of pro-Palestinian support fronts prompted the regime to reactivate terror groups on Syrian soil,” First Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi House of Representatives Mohsen al-Mandalawi said on Saturday.

He added that the Iraqi parliament will closely monitor the situation to ensure that proper security measures are taken.

Mandalawi called on Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani, who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, to order the mobilization of all national forces in order to secure the country’s frontiers, and ask security authorities to conduct field visits and assess the situation on the ground.

He also stressed the need for an enhanced exchange of intelligence with the Syrian side, noting that preemptive steps must be taken in order to prevent any infiltration attempt by Takfiri terrorists.

Foreign-backed terrorists led by the Hay’at Tahrir al-Shams (HTS) Takfiri group carried out a surprise assault in the Aleppo and Idlib countryside on Wednesday and overran a number of villages and towns before entering Aleppo on Friday.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-sponsored militancy since March 2011, with Damascus saying the Western states and their regional allies are aiding terrorist groups to wreak havoc in the Arab country.

Terror outfits are seeking to hinder the Syrian government’s efforts aimed at consolidating security and stability in the country, which is also under the Israeli regime's regular aggression.

Israel has been the principal supporter of terrorist groups that oppose the democratically-elected government of President Bashar al-Assad since the foreign-backed militancy erupted in Syria in March 2011.
