AhlulBayt News Agency: The World Food Program (WFP) revealed that the hunger crisis is deepening across the Gaza Strip, stressing that the prices of basic food items have surged by more than 1000% compared to the pre-Israeli aggression levels.
This came in a statement published by the United Nations on its website on Friday evening, highlighting the hunger crisis and the risk of the continuation of the Israeli war and siege on the Palestinians throughout the Gaza Strip, especially in the north.
“The ongoing military operation in northern Gaza has led to the displacement of 130,000 people over the past seven weeks,” the UN Commissioner of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini said.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) also warned that “the ongoing hostilities throughout the Strip are still exposing the Palestinians to a serious danger, especially civilians who are trying to survive in light of the Israeli blockade in North Gaza Governorate.”
According to OCHA, “in northern Gaza, including Gaza City, a critical shortage of cooking gas has forced families to rely on burning waste for fuel, which raises the risk of respiratory infections, at a time when health care services are extremely limited.”
OCHA quoted humanitarian partners as saying, there is a severe shortage in appropriate shelter for hundreds of thousands of displaced people due to hostilities across Gaza.
Less than a quarter of shelter needs in the Strip have been met, leaving nearly a million people at risk of too harsh conditions as winter is approaching, the UN office pointed out.
It also stressed that about 545,000 people live in damaged buildings and temporary shelters, which confirms the urgent need to ensure bringing in thousands of groups of tarpaulin and insulating fabric immediately.
In the south, the rains that flooded the shelters along the beach in the town of Al-Qarara led to the displacement of hundreds of families to Hamad Town in Khan Yunis Governorate, in southern Gaza over the past six days, according to the same source.
