Iraqi Shia cleric: ICC verdict is historic

Ammar Al-Hakim, the leader of the Iraqi National Wisdom Movement, has described the International Criminal Court's (ICC) verdict condemning the Israeli government as historic.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Ammar Al-Hakim, the leader of the Iraqi National Wisdom Movement, has described the International Criminal Court's (ICC) verdict condemning the Israeli government as historic.

Al-Hakim observed that the region is currently experiencing extraordinary circumstances, particularly in the aftermath of the events that occurred on October 7. These events resulted in widespread destruction in Gaza, along with mass killings and starvation, as well as the brutality demonstrated by Israeli forces in Lebanon.

Al-Hakim remarked that reports from Gaza and Lebanon suggest that the Israeli government has been unsuccessful in achieving many of its objectives. He highlighted the significance of the ICC's ruling, which condemns the Israeli regime for acts of murder, mass killings, and starvation.

He also noted that the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon have undermined the narrative of oppression that Israel has attempted to promote.

On November 22, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former war minister, Yoav Gallant, for committing war crimes in Gaza amid what has been described as a genocidal campaign against the Palestinian territory.

Judges at the ICC determined that there are "reasonable grounds" to believe that Netanyahu and Gallant "intentionally and knowingly deprived the civilian population in Gaza of objects indispensable to their survival."

In response to the court's ruling, several countries—including Germany, France, Italy, Canada, and Australia, all of which have close ties to Israel—announced their intention to respect the ICC's decision and arrest both individuals if they enter their territories.
