AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): One in three British Muslims are considering leaving the UK as a result of rising Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hate following the summer riots, a recent survey finds.
The survey by Tell Mama, a UK-based charity monitoring anti-Muslim hate, reveals that most British Muslims feel Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred have risen sharply following the summer riots triggered by the Southport attack.
The unrest, which followed the fatal stabbing of three young girls in Southport, saw mosques and asylum seeker accommodations targeted.
The survey, conducted eight weeks after the violence, gathered responses from 750 Muslims across the UK.
According to the findings, 71% of respondents reported an increase in anti-Muslim hatred since the riots. Additionally, one in three said they had considered leaving the UK due to the hostility.
While 55% of respondents indicated they felt safe or very safe in the UK, about 62% expressed concerns that the risk of harm to Muslim communities had increased significantly or somewhat.
Despite the tensions, 50% said they had become more open about their Muslim identity, often through discussions with friends and colleagues.
Iman Atta, director of Tell Mama, highlighted the need for government action, saying: “Many British Muslims are very scared at the moment. They need our government to show it hears their fears and is working to keep them safe. This poll is proof of the terrifying impact anti-Muslim hate and Islamophobia is having."
She urged authorities to focus on social cohesion in the hardest-hit areas, adding, “These findings should be a wake-up call for the government.”
