Palestinian Keffiyeh recognized as intangible cultural heritage by ICESCO: Ministry

The Palestinian Ministry of Culture has announced that the Palestinian keffiyeh has been officially inscribed on the Intangible Cultural Heritage List of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO).

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The Palestinian Ministry of Culture has announced that the Palestinian keffiyeh has been officially inscribed on the Intangible Cultural Heritage List of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO).

The announcement coincided with the observance of the National Day of the Keffiyeh.

In a Sunday statement, Emad Hamdan, the Palestinian Authority’s Minister of Culture, described the keffiyeh as a powerful symbol of national identity and a witness to the Palestinian people’s enduring struggle for freedom, according to Palestinian media outlets.

"Its widespread adoption reflects the solidarity among all segments of our society over decades of striving for liberation," Hamdan stated.

The National Day of the Keffiyeh, introduced by the Palestinian Ministry of Education in 2015, is marked annually with students, teachers, and school administrators wearing the traditional headscarf and raising the Palestinian flag in celebration.

The keffiyeh is a square piece of cloth embroidered with intersecting black lines, traditionally folded and worn as a men’s head covering. Its historical significance dates back to the 1936 Arab Revolt against British colonial rule in Palestine, when revolutionary leaders donned the keffiyeh and encouraged the public to wear it as a show of unity and to prevent the identification of freedom fighters.

Since the start of the Israeli aggression on the besieged Gaza Strip in October last year, protestors across the world have worn the keffiyeh in a show of solidarity with Palestinians.
