Turkish mosque puts Kaaba Kiswah on display, draws visitors

A rare piece of the Kaaba’s kiswah, the silk cover from 1988, is now on display at the historic Old Mosque in Edirne, Türkiye.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): A rare piece of the Kaaba’s kiswah, the silk cover from 1988, is now on display at the historic Old Mosque in Edirne, Türkiye.

The exhibit has attracted visitors from across the region, offering them a unique glimpse of Islamic heritage.

Provincial Mufti Ercan Aksu explained to Anadolu Agency that the Kaaba’s cover is replaced annually on the eve of Eid al-Adha.

The section on display, known as the “Burka” or door curtain, was replaced in 1988. Measuring 6 meters by 3 meters and weighing 70 kilograms, it is made from pure silk and features Quranic verses, including Surah Al-Fatiha, along with other inscriptions of Allah’s names.

The Kaaba kiswah will remain on display until the end of Eid al-Fitr.

The mosque also holds a fragment of the Black Stone (Hacer-ül Esved) from the Kaaba, placed to the right of the mihrab. This piece is said to be a remnant of stones that fell from the Kaaba during a rainstorm, according to tradition.

Visitor Bahar Yenerel, who traveled from Lüleburgaz, described the exhibit as deeply moving. “Seeing this part of the Kaaba cover here is truly special,” she said.

Aksu noted that fragments of the Black Stone have been in Türkiye for centuries, including pieces embedded in the Sokullu Mehmet Pasha Mosque in Istanbul.
