Gaza humanitarian crisis could develop into famine: WFP

The World Food Program (WFP) says an immediate action has to be taken to avert famine in the Gaza Strip, amid Israel's sever restrictions on aid flow into the besieged coastal enclave.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The World Food Program (WFP) says an immediate action has to be taken to avert famine in the Gaza Strip, amid Israel's sever restrictions on aid flow into the besieged coastal enclave.

The United Nations' food agency said Tuesday that the humanitarian crisis in the besieged populated territory could soon deteriorate.

“Now, as the situation in northern Gaza continues to deteriorate, the likelihood of a larger group being impacted by famine will surely increase unless conditions on the ground improve.”

"Restrictions on humanitarian aid coming into Gaza are severe," WFP said, adding that only 5,000 tons of aid had entered the Gaza Strip this month.

The food agency said that it had approximately 94,000 tons of food standing by in Egypt and Jordan that could feed 1 million people for four months, but that could not bring it into Gaza because too few entry points were open and others were not safe enough.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and other humanitarian agencies say Israel severely restricts aid flow into Gaza.

More than 1.9 million Palestinians are displaced and the Gaza Strip faces widespread shortages of food, water and medicine.

WFP warned in mid-October that the risk of famine will persist throughout Gaza this winter unless Israel halts its hostilities and allows more humanitarian aid into the territory.
