Head of IUMS raises alarms about anti-Muslim violence in India

The head of the International Union of Muslim Scholars voiced concerns about the escalation of Islamophobia and violence against Muslims in India.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The head of the International Union of Muslim Scholars voiced concerns about the escalation of Islamophobia and violence against Muslims in India.

In a post on X, Sheikh Ali al-Qaradaghi condemned systematic moves against Islam’s followers and religious symbols in the South Asian country, Al-Ittihad website reported.

He described the growing anti-Muslim violence in India as a threat to the country’s society as a whole.

He referred to the recent attacks on Muslims in the city of Uttarkashi and Hindu extremists calling for the demolition of a mosque in the city and said mosques are not just buildings but they are places of peace and worship.

Attacks on mosques are clear breaches of the rights of the Muslim minority and should be protected by law, he stressed.

Sheikh al-Qaradaghi warned that the growing trend of attacks on Muslims and Islamic sites indicates the intensification of a discourse of hate against Muslims and their marginalization in society.

He underlined that Muslims in India want respect for their sanctities as part of their legitimate rights.

In recent weeks, Hindu mobs have held rallies in Uttarkashi calling for the demolition of a mosque they claim was illegally constructed.
