Historic mosque in Baku reopens to worshippers

A historical mosque in Baku, the capital of the Republic of Azerbaijan, was reopened after the completion of restoration and repair work.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): A historical mosque in Baku, the capital of the Republic of Azerbaijan, was reopened after the completion of restoration and repair work.

The mosque in the Ahmadli District of Baku, built 120 years ago, was officially launched after restoration by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Azertag website reported.

Head of the foundation Mehriban Aliyeva and her deputy Leyla Aliyeva visited the mosque on Monday.

The restoration work covered various parts of the mosque, including the men and women prayer halls, ablution rooms and the ceremonial hall.

Efforts were made during restoration to preserve the Azeri Islamic architecture of different parts of the mosque.

The Republic of Azerbaijan is a Muslim majority state of more than nine million people in the Caucasus region.

Shia Muslims account for 85 percent of the country’s population.
