AhlulBayt News Agency: Thousands of people from the city of Kairouan in Tunisia gathered on Saturday evening at the historic Uqba ibn Nafi Mosque to celebrate the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
The Great Mosque of Kairouan, also known as the Mosque of Uqba, hosts annual activities to commemorate the Prophet's birth.
This year, thousands of participants from both within and outside Tunisia attended the celebration, Al-Quds Al-Arabi reported. The mosque is among the first mosques established by Muslims in North Africa.
Sunni Muslims worldwide celebrate the 12th of Rabi' al-Awwal each year as the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Many Islamic countries and Muslim communities observe various events and activities to honor this occasion.
Founded in 670 by the Arab general Uqba ibn Nafi, the Great Mosque of Kairouan is one of the oldest and most significant Islamic monuments in North Africa. The mosque covers an area of over 9,000 square meters.
The mosque has undergone several renovations, particularly during the Aghlabid period in the 9th century, which gave it its current form.
A UNESCO World Heritage site, the mosque is renowned for its architectural and historical significance, incorporating elements from pre-Islamic, Roman, and Byzantine styles.
