Ahlulbayt News Agency: The 38th edition of the International Islamic Unity Conference will kick off in the Iranian capital on Thursday, during the International Muslim Unity Week, an official said.
President Masoud Pezeshkian will officiate the opening ceremony, the secretary general of the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought (WPIST) said at a press conference on Saturday morning.
Hojat-ol-Islam Hamid Shahriari said the theme of this year’s conference is “Islamic cooperation for reaching common values with a focus on the issue of Palestine”.
Islamic fraternity and avoiding sedition and conflict are among the values that will be emphasized at the conference, he said.
A total of 234 scholars, thinker and religious, cultural and political figures will address the conference in 16 forum, he noted.
There will be guests from 30 Muslim countries, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, as well as other countries like the US and Russia, Hojat-ol-Islam Shahriari stated.
He added that 12 new books will be unveiled in ceremonies during the international event.
On Sunday, September 21, which marks the birth anniversaries of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Imam Sadiq (AS), the participants at the conference will meet with Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, he said.
Hojat-ol-Islam Shahriari went on to say that the conference will conclude with a final statement on September 21.
The 17th day of Rabi al-Awwal, which falls on September 21 this year, is believed by Shia Muslims to mark the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), while Sunni Muslims regard the 12th day of the month (Thursday, September 16) as the birthday of the last prophet.
The interval between the two dates is celebrated every year as the Islamic Unity Week.
Late Founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran Imam Khomeini (RA) declared the occasion as the Islamic Unity Week back in the 1980s.
