International Muslim film festival kicks off in Kazan, Tatarstan

The 20th edition of the Kazan International Muslim Film Festival got underway in the capital of the Russian Republic of Tatarstan on Friday.

AhlulBayt News Agency: The 20th edition of the Kazan International Muslim Film Festival got underway in the capital of the Russian Republic of Tatarstan on Friday.

At the opening ceremony, head of the Russian Muslims culture department Roshan Abbasov read out a message from Sheikh Ravil Gaynutdin, the head of the Russian Muftiat Council.

In his message, Sheikh Gaynutdin hailed the festival for creating an opportunity for interaction among religions and uniting filmmakers from Russian and Muslim countries in promotion of moral and spiritual values and ideas for peace and humanity.  

Abbasov also addressed the ceremony, saying movies containing spiritual and moral messages and traditional global values are popular in society today.

He added that the Kazan Muslim film festival has turned into a platform for education, spiritual development and enhancing peace via the art of cinema.

He noted that the festival also includes films from the BRICS group of countries, adding that in 2024, when Russian holds the rotating presidency of the group, the city of Kazan has hosted and plans to host other events for BRICS countries, including sports contests and an international Quran competition.

The Kazan International Muslim Film Festival has been held with the motto “Through the dialogue of cultures to the culture of dialogue” since 2005.

The first edition was organized under the initiative of the Muftis Council of Russia, the Federal Agency of Culture and Cinematography of the Russian Federation, and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Tatarstan with the support of the head of the Republic of Tatarstan.

It is annually takes place with the participation of tens of countries, including Muslim states, featuring films that promote spiritual and moral values.

This year’s event has been attended by filmmakers from Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Morocco, Senegal, China, Malaysia, Egypt, Iraq, Oman, Mauritania, Tunisia, Cuba, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Oman, New Zealand, Argentina and Japan.
