AhlulBayt News Agency: Two Iranian pilgrims started a project this year to write down the Holy Quran verses during their 72-day Arbaeen journey from Mashhad to Karbala.
“A few days before starting our pilgrimage on foot from Mashhad to Karbala, we decided to transcribe a Quran during our journey toward the shrine of Imam Hussein (AS),” Mohammad Fatehi Peykani, a retired bank employee, told IQNA news.
“Over the course of seventy-two days of walking, we spent our rest periods transcribing verses from the Holy Quran,” he added.
He was joined by Khalil Taheri in this spiritual journey and project.
He says they have completed transcribing half of the Quran in the Nasta'liq script so far.
“At the end of each page, we note the location where that particular page of the Quran was transcribed, which helps preserve the memories of this spiritual journey,” Fatehi added.
Arbaeen is a religious event observed by Shia Muslims on the fortieth day after the Day of Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the third Shia imam.
It is one of the largest annual pilgrimages in the world, with millions of Shia Muslims walking to Karbala from various cities in Iraq and neighboring countries. This year, the day of Arbaeen fell on August 25.
“We hope to finish the remaining portion of the Quran near the shrine of Imam Reza (AS) and then present the bound manuscript to his holy shrine,” Fatehi said.

“In this transcription, we decided that after completing each page, we would write conceptual and interpretative notes about the Quranic verses on the back of the page, so that the reader can simultaneously benefit from both the text and its meaning,” he added.
