AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): French authorities arrested and subsequently released nurse Imane Maarifi, who had spent 15 days volunteering as a medic in the Gaza Strip amid the Israeli regime’s genocidal war.
Lawyer Rafik Chekkat, founder of the Islamophobia platform, reported that Maarifi was taken into custody from her home on Thursday.
He criticized the arrest, highlighting that it occurred while French soldiers who fought in Gaza “enjoy total impunity.”
Thomas Portes, a lawmaker from the La France Insoumise (LFI) party, confirmed Maarifi's release from custody.
He commented on social media platform X, stating, “The search of the home in front of the family leaves no doubt about the desire to intimidate the voices that are raised to support the Palestinian people and demand an immediate ceasefire.”
Maarifi had participated in pro-Palestinian rallies in France, sharing her experiences about the dire situation in Gaza. She has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and advocated for a boycott of companies supporting the Israeli regime.
During her time in Gaza, Maarifi volunteered as a medic at the European hospital in Khan Yunis.
The Israeli regime launched its devastating war on Gaza on October 7 last year after Palestinian resistance groups carried out Operation Al-Aqsa Flood in response to increased violence against Palestinians.
The Israeli aggression has claimed the lives of more than 40,800 Palestinians, leaving more than 94,000 others injured. Most of the victims are women and children.
The brutal aggression has displaced almost all of the Gaza population while also destroying numerous hospitals and other necessary infrastructure.
