Security tightened in Najaf for end of Safar mourning rituals

As a large number of pilgrims are expected to visit the holy shrine of Imam Ali (AS) in Najaf in coming days, the Iraqi forces have stepped up measures to ensure security.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): As a large number of pilgrims are expected to visit the holy shrine of Imam Ali (AS) in Najaf in coming days, the Iraqi forces have stepped up measures to ensure security.

General Mikdad Miri, a spokesman for the Najaf security committee, said there has been coordination among related bodies, including the governor’s office, the Iraqi army, interior ministry and Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) for upholding security and providing services to pilgrims.

The 28th day of teh lunar Hijri month of Safar, which falls on Monday, September 2, marks the demise anniversary of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hassan (AS).

The 30th day of the lunar month, September 4 this year, is marked as the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Reza (AS), the eighth Shia Imam.

According to the Astan (custodianship) of Imam Ali (AS) holy shrine, it will host more than 600 groups of mourners on the 28th day of Safar.

There will be special mourning rituals and program on the sad occasion of demise anniversary of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hassan (AS) at the holy shrine, the Astan noted.

Meanwhile, the PMU said in a statement that its forces have launched an extensive campaign in Najaf to serve the pilgrims in coming days.
