AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Protesters gathered outside the U.S. Consulate in Cape Town, holding the United States accountable for what they termed the genocide against the Palestinian people.
The demonstration was part of a broader movement of solidarity with Gaza amid ongoing violence.
Demonstrators lined the street at the back of the consulate compound, chanting slogans that highlighted America's complicity in Israel's aggression, which has persisted for nearly a year. Police permitted only 50 protesters to approach the mission's front gate, where organizers and speakers addressed the crowd.
One demonstrator expressed that the Palestinian and Islamic resistance truly represent the aspirations and rights of the Palestinian people. "Despite what is happening to our brothers and sisters, they are resolute because Hamas, as the elected representatives of the people of Gaza, is fighting the good fight on their behalf. It is important for them to continue this fight until they have full control of the state of Palestine and rid themselves of the Zionists who currently seek to control Gaza, the West Bank, and Palestine as a whole," the protester stated.
Broader Context of Pro-Palestinian Protests
This demonstration is part of a series of protests that have erupted across South Africa since the outbreak of conflict in Gaza on October 7, 2023. Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets in Cape Town and other cities, calling for an immediate ceasefire and expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people.
On November 11, a massive rally in Cape Town drew thousands, with participants demanding the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador and the closure of the Israeli embassy. The protests have been organized by various civil society groups and political parties, reflecting a growing frustration with the ongoing violence and humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Calls for Action
The protests have also prompted calls for the South African government to take a stronger stance against the Israeli government. Speakers at the rallies have urged local officials to condemn Israeli actions and support the Palestinian cause, drawing parallels between the struggle for Palestinian rights and South Africa's own history of apartheid.
As the situation in Gaza remains dire, with reports of significant casualties and humanitarian needs, the demonstrations in South Africa reflect a broader global movement advocating for Palestinian rights and calling for an end to the violence.
