AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Dar es Salaam, a major city and commercial port on Tanzania’s Indian Ocean coast hosted a Quran competition for women this past weekend.
The Aisha Sarwar Foundation organized the event, whose closing ceremony was attended by several members of parliament.
The contenders competed in memorization of the Holy Quran at 8 levels (memorization of 1 Juz (part), three Juzes, five Juzes, seven Juzes, ten Juzes, 15 Juzes, 20 Juzes, 25 Juzes, and 30 Juzes of the Quran).
Winners of the top three ranks at each level were awarded at the ceremony, according to the Iranian Cultural Center in the country.
This was the second Quran competition for women in Dar es-Salaam in two months.
The previous one took place in July by the Umm al-Mumineen Institute and was attended by a number of government officials.
The city is also going to host an international Quran competition for African countries’ women in September.
There will be contestants from 11 African countries competing in the upcoming international event.
Tanzania is a country in East Africa where Islam is the religion of about 35 percent of the population.
On the mainland, Muslim communities are concentrated in coastal areas, with some large Muslim majorities also in inland urban areas especially and along the former caravan routes. More than 99 percent of the population of the Zanzibar archipelago is Muslim.
