AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The inauguration ceremony of the new Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian was held in the Iranian parliament with many foreign dignitaries in attendance on Tuesday afternoon.
In the inauguration ceremony in the parliament, Iran’s President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian was sworn-in before the parliament as the ninth president of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
More than 70 foreign delegates, including senior officials and secretary generals of regional and international bodies, attended the ceremony.
The official ceremony started at 4 p.m. Tehran local time.
As many as 600 foreign and Iranian journalists were at the parliament to cover the inauguration ceremony.
The new Iranian president has 15 days to introduce his cabinet to the parliament for a vote of confidence after the swearing-in ceremony.
After the Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf delivered a speech at the start of the ceremony, 69-year-old Pezeshkian took an oath of office on the Holy Qur'an.
“I as the president, in front of the Holy Quran and the people of Iran, swear to almighty God to be the guardian of the official religion and the Islamic Republic system and the constitution of the country,” Pezeshkian declared.
In his address to the ceremony, Pezeshkian said that "We will seek constructive and effective engagement with the world based on the principles of dignity, wisdom and expediency."
He said that Iran wants to become the first power in economic, scientific, and technological fields at the regional level.
"The world also needs to seize the unique opportunity to solve regional and global problems with the participation of a powerful, peace-seeking and dignified Iran."
He pointed to the Israeli regime's genocidal war on Gaza and lamented the United States and some Western states for delivering arms to the regime amid its war on Gaza Strip.
Later in his speech, the Iranian president pointed to his administration's readiness to continued negotiations with the world major powers in order to remove the anti-Iran sanctions, reminding the West and Washington that Iran's nuclear program is peaceful as it has been verified by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) .
He stressed that Iran remained committed to our commitments under the nuclear deal.
"Pressure and sanctions do not work [in dealing with Iran]," Pezeshkian addressed the Western States, calling on them to show respect to the noble Iranian nation.
"Iran has always stood on the right side of history," he stressed.
"Iran is a safe, united and stable country," highlighted Pezeshkian.
The new president of Iran went on to call for a detente in the region, saying that "the countries in the region must not spend their valuable resources on conflict and war of attrition."
"My administration wants a strong region" he emphasized.
Pezeshkian reiterated his support for the Palestinian cause by raising the hand of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh after taking the oath of office, and his subsequent speech in Parliament.
