Arbaeen 2024: Iran to establish 3,500 Mawkibs to serve 5m pilgrims

A total of 3,500 Iranian moukebs will serve and expected five million pilgrims in this year’s Arbaeen procession, an official says.

AhlulBayt News Agency: A total of 3,500 Iranian moukebs will serve and expected five million pilgrims in this year’s Arbaeen procession, an official says.

This is according to Majid Namjoo, an official with organizing moukebs at Iran’s Arbaeen Headquarters. He made the statements while briefing reporters on Monday about the upcoming pilgrimage.

A total of 5,281 moukebs have completed registration, however, this registration does not guarantee their participation in Arbaeen procession, he said.

“After the review process, around 3,500 moukebs will be selected to serve the pilgrims… Of these, 1,200 will enter Iraq, and 2,300 will provide services at the borders and on the routes leading to the borders,” added the official.

“The main hosts of Arbaeen are the Iraqi people, and our role is to support them and their moukebs. About 40,000 Iraqi moukebs serve pilgrims during Arbaeen,” he said, adding “We aim to have joint moukebs with the Iraqis.”

Between seven and eight thousand trucks travel from Iran to Iraq for the event, he added.

The Arbaeen mourning ceremony is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.

It marks the 40th day after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS). This year’s Arbaeen is expected to fall on August 25, depending on the moonsighting.

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias flock to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites. The pilgrims, mainly from Iraq and Iran, travel long routes on foot to the holy city.

“The Iraqi government has improved the Arbaeen routes and installed shade,” Namjoo said, noting, “We also have well-equipped moukebs at the borders.”

“Given the hot season, providing water and ice is a priority, and authorities are ensuring we have adequate supplies for this year's Arbaeen,” he noted.

“The Arbaeen journeys start from the first day of Safar (August 6), with the peak occurring on the 15th of the lunar month (August 20). We have prepared moukebs to provide services from the beginning, and their number will gradually increase,” according to the official.

Last year, 400,000 nationals entered Iran for Arbaeen, he said, noting that this year, Iraq has announced it will accept only 50,000 nationals and has requested that we do not accept more foreign pilgrims although Iran has the capacity to host more foreign pilgrims.

“We expect to provide services for five million pilgrims this year,” he highlighted.

Some moukebs have also committed to continue their services until the 23rd of Safar (August 28), which will mark the final day of the services.
