AhlulBayt News Agency:  Shia Muslims in Accra, the capital city of Ghana hold mourning rituals in the national Shia headquarters to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS).

The ceremony which was held at the Shia headquarters cited the recitation of elegies, beating on chests, and delivering lectures about the Ashura uprise.

Ghana's imam of Shia, Sheikh Abubakar Ahmad Kamaludeen said: “It’s been over 30 years ago, we have been calling on people of Ghana to appreciate or even know who Imam Hussein was, and now many people including the Christians know that we have someone called Imam Hussein and we are here together celebrating his values and principles. Now many appreciate the fact that Islam can only be Islam with Imam Hussein, had it not for the martyrdom of Imam Hussein we wouldn’t have sustained Islam, we wouldn’t have understood Islam as it is, and the sacrifices he made is now repeating itself in the people of Gaza.”

Imam Hussein, the third Imam of Shia Islam, was martyred along with his family and companions during the Battle of Karbala in the 61st year after the migration of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Mecca to Medina. The Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram, is a day of profound significance for Shia Muslims worldwide, as it commemorates this tragic event.
