AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Like in previous years, Shias in different cities in Thailand are ready for the mourning rituals of Muharram, marking the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS).
Husseiniyas (religious centers) and mosques have been prepared to host the rituals in the capital Bangkok and cities in the south like Nakhon Si Thammarat, Trang, Satun and Phatthalung.
The Wilayat Husseiniya of the Iranian Cultural Center in Bangkok also organizes mourning ceremonies attended by Iranians residing in the country, as well as Thai Muslims and those from other nationalities.
They are held every night at 20:30 local time beginning on the third day of Muharram.
Muharram, which will start on July 7 this year, is the first month in the lunar Hijri calendar.
Shia Muslims, and others in different parts of the world, hold ceremonies every year in the month of Muharram to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions.
The third Shia Imam (AS) and a small group of his followers and family members were martyred by the tyrant of his time - Yazid Bin Muawiya, in the battle of Karbala on the tenth day of Muharram (known as Ashura) in the year 680 AD.
Thailand is a country at the center of the Indochinese peninsula in Southeast Asia.
Muslims are the second largest religious group in Thailand making up about five percent of the country’s 70 million population.
