Islamophobia: Brooklyn mosque vandalized in another suspected hate crime in NYC

Police are actively searching for an individual accused of defacing a Brooklyn mosque's sign in what is being investigated as an anti-Muslim hate crime.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Police are actively searching for an individual accused of defacing a Brooklyn mosque's sign in what is being investigated as an anti-Muslim hate crime.

The incident occurred early on the morning of May 29, according to authorities.

An unidentified object was reportedly hurled at the signage of Muhammad Mosque 7C, situated on Pennsylvania Avenue close to Glenmore Avenue in the East New York neighborhood, around 1:30 a.m, New York Daily News reported on Friday.

Officials stated that the sign, which was attached to a banner extending over a narrow passageway between two structures, sustained damage when the thrown object created a tear in it.

Footage from security cameras captured the alleged perpetrator fleeing the location. The NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force is currently examining the case.

In a bid to identify the suspect, police released images from surveillance footage on Friday, appealing to the public for assistance.

The man is described as being of African American descent, approximately 6 feet in height, with a medium build, and distinctive tattoos along his right arm.

His last known attire included a black cap, a black shirt, black trousers, and sneakers that were white with grey accents.

The New York division of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) has expressed support for the NYPD's investigation into the incident, which may have been motivated by bias.

“Nationwide, hate crimes targeting Muslim communities are on the rise and every possible incident must be taken seriously,” said CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher. “We thank the NYPD for launching a hate crime investigation into this vandalism.”

The NYPD is urging anyone with information about the suspect's location to contact the NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. Assurances have been made that the confidentiality of all callers will be maintained.
