AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The Holy Shrine of Imam Reza (AS) in Mashhad, northeastern Iran, was illuminated and decorated on the anniversary of his birth.
The Imam Reza holy shrine (Sanctuary of Imam Reza) in Mashhad, Iran, is a complex that contains the mausoleum of Imam Reza, the eighth Imam of Twelver Shias. It is the largest mosque in the world by area. Also contained within the complex are the Goharshad Mosque, a museum, a library, four seminaries, a cemetery, the Razavi University of Islamic Sciences, a dining hall for pilgrims, vast prayer halls, and other buildings.
The illumination of the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS) is a ritual with a long history, but since about half a century ago, it has become more eye-catching thanks to the Waqf tradition (endowment).
Annually, 20,000 colored lamps ornate the shrine of Imam Reza, the eighth Imam of the World's Shia.
