AhlulBayt News Agency: Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb, the imam of Al-Azhar, paid a visit to the Sayyida Zaynab Mosque in Cairo a day after its reopening.
Al-Tayyeb was welcomed by Awqaf Minister Mohamed Mukhtar Gomma and a number of other officials during the visit.
He toured different parts of the mosque and said prayers.
Gomma briefed him on the process of the renovation and restoration works at the mosque.
The sheikh of Al-Azhar appreciated the ministry and the government’s efforts to renovate and restore old mosques and heritage sites in the country.
The Sayyida Zaynab Mosque was reopened in a ceremony on Sunday after the conclusion of renovation works.
It is one of the largest and most famous mosques in Egypt’s capital.
Some say Hazrat Zeynab (SA), the granddaughter of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), is buried there.
The mosque has a special and important place in the city’s history and culture and has been a main center for Quranic circles and religious gatherings for centuries.
