Iranians to celebrate Eid al-Fitr on Wednesday

The crescent moon of the lunar Hijri month of Shawaal is predicted to be observable in Iran on Tuesday evening, an official said.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The crescent moon of the lunar Hijri month of Shawaal is predicted to be observable in Iran on Tuesday evening, an official said.

Hojat-ol-Islam Ali Reza Movahednejad, a member of the Istihlal (moon sighting) committee of the office of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, told IRIB News that experts believe the crescent moon can be easily sighted Tuesday.

Therefore, he noted, Wednesday will be the first day of Shawwal, which marks Eid al-Fitr.

Hojat-ol-Islam Ali Reza Movahednejad added that some 100 moon-sighting teams will be dispatched to different parts of the country to sight the moon.

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection and community.

At the end of Ramadan, when the month of Shawwal beings, Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr.

Some religious scholars rely on astronomical calculations to determine the beginning of lunar months while most of them believe visual sighting of the moon should be used in this case.

Several other Muslim countries, including Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, and Libya, are also likely to observe the Eid on Wednesday.
