Police have arrested a man who allegedly made anti-Muslim remarks to a store employee and a customer, and then stole the customer's phone in Toronto last Sunday.

The incident occurred around 1:45 p.m. near Danforth and Warden Avenues, where police responded to a robbery call, Toronto Star reported on Thursday.

According to police, the man entered the store and started insulting the employee's religion. A customer intervened and asked him to stop, but he also targeted her with Islamophobic slurs.

He then attacked the customer, knocking her to the ground, and ran away with her phone.

Police arrested the man and charged him with robbery with violence and two counts of possessing stolen property under $5,000.

He appeared in court last Monday at 10 a.m.

Police are investigating the incident as a possible hate crime.
