Egypt’s Awqaf minister said the Sayeda Zainab Mosque in Cairo has been temporarily closed to speed up the repair and renovation work.
Mohammed Mukhtar Gomaa said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the renovation work is in the final stages.
He said the provisional closure of the mosque was necessary so that the contractor could expedite the competition of renovation.
The mosque was closed on Thursday, February 1, and is expected to reopen before the start of the holy month of Ramadan, he said.
The Sayeda Zainab Mosque is a historic mosque in the capital of Egypt.
It constitutes one of the most important and biggest mosques in the history of the country.
According to some accounts, it is the burial place of Hazrat Zeynab (SA).
It has been a major venue for Quranic and religious activities in the city for centuries.
The last renovation work at the mosque had been implemented by the Awqaf ministry in 1969.
