AhlulBayt News Agency: An Indonesian Muslim activist called Islamic hijab a defiant symbol against the Israeli occupation and a visible representation of their identity and resilience.

Zainab Azzahra, activist from Indonesia, speaking at the 16th webinar of al-Aqsa Storm on the theme “Rold of Palestinian Women in Resistance and Palestine” hailed the key role of Palestinian women since the beginning days of Jewish occupation of the Palestinian lands.

She said,” The keen sense of identity for Palestinian women is illustrated when donning the hijab” and added,” For many Palestinian women, the hijab symbolized a visible and physical representation of their own defiance against the reality created by their enemy.”

The Indonesian thinker noted that donning hijab is the way for Palestinian Muslim women to showcase themselves as the “other” opposing the occupier, be it the soldiers or the settlers.

She said that the Palestinian women had in fact predicted the disaster that would occur in their ancestral land since the British colonialist divided the region into two parts to accommodate the Jewish refugees and the final declaration of Israel as a country in 1948.

Zainab Azzahra explained the history of Palestinian women joining the different groups protesting the Jewish settlements long before the Balfour Declaration was issued by the then British government in 1917.

According to the Indonesian activist, the Palestinian women have been active in different political, social and economic arenas to protest against the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian lands.

Speaking on the current genocidal war in Gaza and the supports for the Palestinians under Israeli bombardment, she hailed the Yemen as the first Middle East country whose armed forces and the nation stood up and defended the Palestinians.

Hailing the recent Yemeni military operations in the Red Sea she said, “Even though Yemen is the poorest Arab country but it dares to voice their support for their Palestinian brothers and sisters without fear from the US and UK.”

The 16th edition of the al-Aqsa Storm webinars as held by World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought was held on Wednesday as a number of female activists and thinkers expressed their views on the role of Palestinian women in more than seven decades of fight against occupation in the Palestinian lands.
