Bangladesh welcomes world court ruling on 'genocide' in Gaza

Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud welcomed on Saturday the provisional ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the genocide case brought by South Africa against Israel.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud welcomed on Saturday the provisional ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the genocide case brought by South Africa against Israel.

“We hope that Israel will comply with the ICJ verdict and take effective measures to stop the genocide,” he told reporters in the national capital of Dhaka after meeting with a UK delegation.

Bangladesh will continue diplomatic cooperation with South Africa to help stop crimes against humanity that are being committed in Palestine, he said.

Turning to events closer to home, Mahmud said there has been tension on the Bangladeshi border with Myanmar for some time.

“Our border security forces are on alert. This situation may have a negative impact on Rohingya repatriation,” he said.

The ICJ ordered Israel on Friday to take "all measures within its power" to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza but fell short of ordering a cease-fire.

The court also ordered Israel to take immediate and effective measures to enable the provision of urgently needed services and humanitarian assistance in the Gaza Strip.

South Africa brought the genocide case against Israel late last month and asked it to grant emergency measures to end the bloodshed in Gaza, where more than 26,000 Palestinians have been killed since Oct. 7.
