Belgium extends support for genocide lawsuit against Israel at ICJ

A cabinet minister in Belgium has said her country supports South Africa's lawsuit highlighting the Israeli genocide in Gaza at the International Court of Justice.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): A cabinet minister in Belgium has said her country supports South Africa's lawsuit highlighting the Israeli genocide in Gaza at the International Court of Justice.

“If the International Court of Justice issues a verdict against Israel regarding the genocide case, Belgium will fully support that verdict”, Caroline Genz, Minister of Cooperation of Belgium wrote on X social media, referring to Israel's genocide in Gaza, which was raised by South Africa as a plaintiff at the ICJ.

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister of Belgium, Petra De Soter, also announced that her country must take action against the threat of genocide in Gaza and cannot stand by and it is necessary to join South Africa's complaint against the Israeli regime at The Hague Court.

"Belgium cannot stand by and watch the immense human suffering in Gaza. We must act against the threat of genocide", De Sutter stated last week.

Many countries, including Iran, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Jordan, Malaysia, the Maldives, Namibia, Nicaragua have welcomed South Africa’s genocide lawsuit at the ICJ. Belgium is the only European country that has voiced its support for the case so far.

On January 11 and 12, the International Court of Justice held first hearings on South Africa's complaint against the Zionist regime regarding the genocide in the Gaza Strip. The court is the highest legal body of the United Nations, which was established in 1945 to deal with disputes between signatories to international conventions, including genocide convention.

Both South Africa and Israel are signatories to the 1948 Genocide Convention, which gives the International Court of Justice legal jurisdiction over the case. All signatories are obliged not only not to commit genocide, but also to prevent and condemn it.
