ICJ to hold first hearing on January 11 to consider South Africa’s case against Israel

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) will hold its first hearing on Thursday, January 11, to consider the lawsuit filed by the Republic of South Africa against Israel accusing it of crimes of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): The International Court of Justice (ICJ) will hold its first hearing on Thursday, January 11, to consider the lawsuit filed by the Republic of South Africa against Israel accusing it of crimes of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

Spokesperson of the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation, Clayson Monyela, said in a post on X that the hearing is scheduled for January 11th in The Hague and will continue until the next day.

He stressed that his country is continuing with its preparations in this regard.

For its part, Malaysia welcomed in a statement the application by South Africa instituting proceedings against Israel before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) concerning the violations by Israel of its obligations under the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (the “Genocide Convention”) in relation to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The legal action against Israel before ICJ is a timely and tangible step towards legal accountability for Israel’s atrocities in Gaza and the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT) at large, the statement read.

The statement affirmed Malaysia’s support for Palestine, calling on Israel to fulfil its obligations under international law and to immediately end its atrocities against Palestinians.
