AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): Gervonta Davis, a world champion boxer from Baltimore, converted to Islam on Sunday at a local mosque, according to Imam Hassan Abdi, who led the ceremony.

Davis, who adopted the Muslim name Abdul Wahid, meaning "the servant of the One," joined the faith after an hour-long conversation with Abdi about being the best version of oneself.

Davis, 29, is undefeated with 29 wins and has held the World Boxing Association lightweight title since 2019. He is also involved in community development projects in his hometown, such as renovating homes in Sandtown-Winchester, the West Baltimore neighborhood he grew up in.

Abdi, who is based in Philadelphia and has preached all over the country, met Davis and his team for breakfast after they were introduced by Sabur Carter, the administrator of Masjid Al-Hidaayah in Woodlawn, where the conversion took place. Abdi said he was surprised by Davis' humility and down-to-earth personality.

On Wednesday, Davis visited Tawheed First Academy, a Muslim school in Woodlawn, to learn more about the religion's history. He sat in on a Muslim studies class and observed the students.

Davis has not legally changed his name, which is not a religious obligation for new Muslims. However, some famous converts have done so, such as the legendary boxer Cassius Clay, who became Muhammad Ali.
